A furry situation

E’s last outfit for Paris Fashion Week actually left us reflecting on the vices and virtues of wearing fur. Her look was based on a simple faux-fur jacket that was paired with some seriously cool leather pants, and tucked into a plain beige sweater. With some accessories including a vintage handbag and quirky shades, the look got the attention of some amazing photographers and bloggers including Goran from Street Style Seconds.

Overall, fashion week boasted flocks of women wearing some amazing coats based on either fur or faux fur. So, it really left us debating the enduring battle between these two.  On one side, wearing fur is sometimes seen as morally amiss; and that we are simply killing animals for the sake of style and comfort. We continue to waste our planet’s valuable resources without any regard for our impact on the future. On the other side, proponents argue that wearing faux-fur is actually more destructive than the real deal because it uses mass quantities of nylon, acrylic, and other chemicals.

To be honest with both sides, we believe that the main problem is the overconsumption of products that we have been accustomed to with every season of new trends. In either case, our mass produced products, whether they are fur or faux-fur are both potentially harmful to the planet. In this sense, we agree with a recent post from Garance that it is not the actual debate of whether we should give up fur or not that is problematic, but it is the way we source our fur and overconsume our resources (yes, even the nylon use for faux fur) that poses a huge problem.
